MEET YOUR LECTURER AND SUPERVISOR
Mienke van Niekerk
Specialist Wellness Counsellor (ASCHP)
Mienke is a Specialist Wellness Counsellor in private practice with a passion for developing competent, ethical and reflective practitioners.
She completed her undergraduate studies at Stellenbosch University with majors in Psychology and Industrial Psychology, followed by a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (cum laude). She later completed her Honours in Counselling Psychology (cum laude) through the University of South Africa (UNISA).
Before entering full-time private practice, Mienke worked as both an educator and school counsellor, where she gained valuable experience supporting children, adolescents and families within the educational setting. She has also gained experience within the Dutch mental healthcare system, allowing her to bring both local and international perspectives to her teaching and supervision.
Today, Mienke works full-time in her private practice—which she established in 2023—bringing four years of dedicated experience to counselling individuals and couples while beautifully combining her passion for therapy with her love for teaching and supervision.
When Mienke began her own counselling journey, she realised that graduating and feeling ready to work with real clients were two very different things. Although university provides an invaluable theoretical foundation, confidence is developed through practical experience, thoughtful supervision and reflective practice.
This programme was created to bridge that gap.
Mienke's goal is not simply to help students complete their required supervised practical hours, but to equip them with the confidence, practical skills and professional identity needed to begin their counselling careers with competence, integrity and compassion.
